NEW YORK MARATHON: A PRIVATE SCREENING FOR THE INITIATED

On Sunday, November 1, our friends at Rematch are turning a Paris studio into a screening room to watch the New York Marathon live. Coffee, baked goods, vintage t-shirts and a crowd that knows its stuff. The marathon, home cinema edition.

There are people who watch the New York Marathon. And there are people who know the name of the starting bridge, how many times Grete Waitz won it, and the exact moment Sinatra's “New York, New York” kicks in. The second group is a kind of secret society: discreet, but extremely well informed. On Sunday, they'll be meeting at Rematch.

While 50,000 runners make their way through New York's five boroughs, our close friends at Rematch, specialists in vintage American sportswear, are setting up at Oddity, a multifunctional space devoted to creativity, both an exhibition space and a photo studio, at 27 rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth. From 1 to 6 PM, they're hosting a live screening of the race. On the menu: the live feed, coffee, baked goods and a selection of vintage t-shirts. Everything you need to dress like a 1985 finisher without running a single metre.

No password at the door, but one piece of advice: if someone brings up the blue line on First Avenue or the four laps of Central Park in 1970, just nod knowingly. You're among the right people.

YOU SHOULD GO IF YOU LIKE AT LEAST ONE OF THESE THINGS

  • Vintage t-shirts with more marathons in their legs than you
  • Very (too) short split shorts from the 80s
  • 80s finisher t-shirts, with their sponsor logos and long-gone typefaces
  • Nylon singlets, terry headbands and white visors
  • T-shirts from neighbourhood 5Ks and Thanksgiving Turkey Trots
  • The graphic design of 80s running magazines and old-school printed bibs
  • Grete Waitz and her nine New York wins
  • Fred Lebow and the 127 starters of 1970, running in circles around Central Park
  • The start on the Verrazzano Bridge, with Sinatra on the speakers
  • The silence of the Queensboro Bridge, then the wall of sound on First Avenue
  • Bill Rodgers, Miki Gorman, Meb Keflezighi and Shalane Flanagan, the few Americans to win on home turf
  • Races taped on VHS and old video stores
  • Foil blankets and finish-line ponchos
  • Yelling “Let's go!” at total strangers, even through a screen
  • Coffee, lots of coffee, and baked goods as an aid station

If you tick at least one box, you're part of the club. If you tick them all, you've probably already run with us, or with Axel and Alex from Rematch. Either way, see you on Sunday.

And by the way, our Buff x Rematch x Jolie Foulée collab, the worst camo in history in neon, is still available on Rematch's online shop.
